OWCAP staff are available at the following locations to answer questions or help tenants submit rental assistance applications for the Utah Rent Relief program:

 Weber County Library - 2464 Jefferson Ave., Ogden, UT 84401

Tuesday – 10am-4pm

Thursday – 10am-4pm

 Ogden DWS Office - 480 27th St., Ogden, UT 84401

Monday – 10am-2pm

 OWCAP’s Rent Relief Hotline is open Monday-Friday from 8am-6pm. During these hours, OWCAP staff will be available to take live phone calls to answer questions about applying or application status.

To call the hotline, dial 801-399-9281, select Option 2 for Housing, then Option 1 for the Rent Relief Hotline. If staff are unavailable, they will return messages within 24-48 hours.

The Fight for Equality Continues

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that” - Martin Luther King Jr.

Born on January 15th, the Reverend King’s birthday is celebrated on the following Monday, the 21st, this year. Doctor King was a preeminent leader of the United States Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and the 1970s, a formative time in my life. He was also a leader in his pursuit of social justice using non-violent methods. He had a huge impact on all of us who witnessed his profound leadership and commitment to this social mission.

He won the Nobel peace prize in 1964. He spoke out against US involvement in the Vietnam War, and was preparing to lead a massive Poor People’s March on Washington DC when he was assassinated. To this day, the Poor People’s Campaign is ongoing and working to help our less fortunate and underserved citizens. Ogden’s Diversity Commission is working with community leaders to continue this important mission.

He was greatly responsible for the passing of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act for African Americans.

He will be honored in Ogden at the MLK Freedom Breakfast on January 21st at the Marshall White Center, 222 28th St,, starting at 9 AM. It is free and open to the public, all are welcome.

Embracing Community Through Theatre

Founded in 2012, Good Company Theatre has been committed to their mission of developing and promoting high-quality, eclectic theatrical productions and events, forging new relationships between audiences, performers, and spaces in the process. Good Company Theatre was founded and is operated by sisters, Camille, and Alicia Washington. GCT remains the only black-owned and operated theatre company in Utah. They continue to spark critical conversations in our community and are a catalyst for creative inspiration and representation in the Greater Ogden Area and their Production of Caroline, or Change is no exception.

Caroline, or Change is a musical set in 1963 Louisiana; a nation reels from the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement and the Kennedy assassination. Caroline, a black maid, and Noah, the son of the Jewish family she works for, struggle to find an identity for their friendship after Noah's stepmother, unable to give Caroline a raise, tells Caroline that she may keep the money Noah leaves in his pockets. Through their intimate story, this beautiful musical portrays the changing rhythms of a nation. Tony Kushner and composer Jeanine Tesori have created a story that addresses contemporary questions of culture, community, race, and class through the lens and musical pulse of the 1960s.

This full-length musical is recommended for ages 13 and up and runs Thursdays through Sundays, November 29 - December 9, 2018. Visit GoodCoTheatre.com for more information and to purchase tickets.

National Disability Awareness Month

October 10, 2018

October is National Disability Awareness Month and during this month we recognize the many contributions that people with disabilities have made. We also raise awareness of employment issues within the disability community. We have a wonderful organization called Roads to independence located here in Ogden. They serve people with disabilities in Weber, Morgan and Davis Counties. Their mission is to promote and enhance independence. They have all sorts of activities on their web page Roads to Independence, that you can be a part of. They also have personal growth classes, recreation, assisted technology and home modification, and many more services. You can also visit the Utah Parent Center for a directory that includes a comprehensive list for all disability specific agencies throughout Utah. I invite you to celebrate not only this month but all year round the diversity that we have here in our lovely city of Ogden.
